Design for London has been working with partners on a number of projects in this area of south-east London, which is part of the London Thames Gateway growth corridor.
In 2008 Urban Practitioners, working with Assemblage Architects completed a planning and regeneration framework. The aim of this was to understand the current economic, social and environmental context, identify the main issues and opportunities, and recommend an appropriate planning and policy approach. The commission also included the preparation of a delivery plan for public realm and local movement infrastructure projects.
The London Development Agency (LDA) funded this work which has informed the development of a joint Supplementary Planning Document for the area, uniquely shared between two London Boroughs, Greenwich and Bexley. This was completed in late 2008 and consultation is due to start shortly. Design for London provided design advice and assistance throughout the process.
Public transport access to this relatively isolated area will be greatly improved with the arrival of Crossrail in Abbey Wood in 2017. Design for London working with Transport for London, the two Boroughs and the LDA's Land & Development team has recently commissioned Marks Barfield and 5th Studio to produce a Crossrail Impact Study including urban realm and interchange design. A report is due in summer 2009.
Design for London assisted the GLA Planning Decisions Unit with strategic planning applications in this area at Tavy Bridge, Belmarsh Prison Extension and Tripcock Point.
Partners: Transport for London, London Development Agency, London Borough of Bexley, and London Borough of Greenwich
