The East London Line extension will link the current line into the suburban rail network at Dalston Junction, Crystal Palace and West Croydon, with new stations at Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. Existing stations will be refurbished.
The new line will open in 2010, and a further extension to Highbury & Islington is due to open by 2011. Phase Two, which is not yet fully-funded, will connect London Overground services from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.
Design for London has been working with Transport for London to ensure that the East London Line extension exhibits excellent architecture and has a positive impact on the public realm. An East London Line Architectural Vision has been produced by Arup Associates, and Design for London has been working with urban designers Burns + Nice to prepare a strategic urban realm plan for the areas around the new stations. This will identify and secure funding for projects that will improve the environment of surrounding areas.
Design for London has reviewed the new station designs and refurbishment of existing stations, and has prepared a Heritage Audit for Transport for London covering the 75 stations that will form part of the London Overground network by 2010.
We are also working with the London Borough of Hackney on a number of public realm and art projects, including Dalston Square, to enhance the rail line's urban integration.
