Design for London is working with Transport for London to ensure that new bus shelters reflect London’s heritage of excellent transport design.
London’s bus transport system is one of the most comprehensive in the world. Every weekday over 6,800 scheduled buses carry around six million passengers on over 700 different routes. Bus shelters are a vital and very visible piece of public transport infrastructure.
London Buses Infrastructure Development team (part of Transport for London) is responsible for design, installation and maintenance of shelters. They are seeking a new design for a mass produced passenger shelter that can improve the experiences of people waiting for buses, while improving streetscape and being robust enough to withstand life on London’s streets.
London Buses Infrastructure Development team are leading an open design competition for new bus shelter designs. Design for London is supporting the process and represented on the technical panel and jury, which includes Transport Controller Peter Hendy, Mayor’s Architecture Advisor Richard Rogers, Design for London Director Peter Bishop and Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic.
Clearchannel, Transport for London’s advertising shelter contractor, will work with the competition winner to develop the shelter and is committed to delivering thousands of new shelters over the next seven years.
