We focus a lot of our resources on areas of London experiencing significant change. In these places we invest in long term collaboration to help shape great places.

The Rainham Village masterplan sets out extensive regeneration plans for this historic village at the eastern edge of London, and builds on the previously prepared framework plan for Rainham and the A1306 corridor.

Stephen Taylor Architects designed the masterplan which sets out how Rainham can employ all its unique characteristics - the proximity to the railway station, the extension of the East London Transit, the historic street pattern, the surrounding marshland with its rivers, and the industrial landscape - to create a dynamic and interesting place to live and work.

The masterplan proposes shifting the village centre towards Rainham Creek. Up to 1,300 new homes could be built through residential development on either side of the Creek, on Dovers Corner and in front of Tesco.

The plan will also resolve the current fragmentation of residential and industrial sites and establishes a more dynamic, finer mix of uses throughout the area. Rainham station will get a new square that will function as a bus-rail and possibly tram interchange, with a rail crossing and the future Rainham Marshes tram-link.

Both the masterplan and the previous framework plan, Living with the Marsh (also prepared by Stephen Taylor Architects) were funded and commissioned by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and the London Borough of Havering. MEI Architects are undertaking detailed design work for the A1306 corridor.

Design for London has assisted as design champions, helping to select and brief consultants and conducting regular design review to ensure the design vision supports London Plan policies and will help deliver design excellence in this challenging and exciting area of regeneration.
