The North Lewisham Links project, led by Design for London and LB Lewisham, helps deliver a number of bottom-up, locally-led improvements that together make up the North Lewisham Links masterplan and are supported by the Mayor’s Great Spaces and London’s Great Outdoors initiatives.
Three key aspects of the project are delivering in April 2011. Douglas Way, a new public space outside the Albany Theatre, will reinvigorate what is currently the main market place for Deptford and the heart of the local community. The Arboretum will help green the route along the A2, increasing diversity and creating modest public spaces along this busy artery, involving local schools in the process. Creekside Urban Park creates a series of landscape improvements to create a connected, generous link of existing parks, new public spaces, and public art. There is a great deal of community support and many aspects of the project have been instigated by the local community making it a prime example of the ‘big society’ in action.
