Design for London has been working with the London Development Agency (LDA) Land & Development team, Transport for London and the London Borough of Lewisham to develop and implement a masterplan to transform the public realm in the heart of Lewisham, and relieve it from the blight of traffic congestion. This will form part of the Lewisham Gateway project.
The project will involve the removal of the A20 roundabout and the re-planning of local roads. This will allow for a central pedestrian spine, the Lewisham Galleria, connecting the train, bus and Docklands Light Railway station to the town centre.
A new public space where the Quaggy and Ravensbourne rivers converge will be created at Confluence Place, with both landscaped green space and hard paved areas. A smaller and more intimate public space will be created at St Stephen's Square at the south eastern corner of the Gateway. This square will have a glazed roof, creating a sheltered space where events and performance can take place all year round.
The scheme has been masterplanned by Arup Associates and Townshend landscape architects are the public space designers, with Design for London acting as design advisors. The public spaces will be built with public sector funding. The project is due to start on site in 2009 with the first phase completed by 2012.
We are also advising the GLA Planning Decisions Unit and the London Borough of Lewisham on the design of the nearby Loampit Vale mixed use development by Barratt Homes.
