Design for London is working with partners to improve the quality of environment and access to the River Shuttle, a tributary of the River Cray in south-east London.

The River Shuttle rises at Avery Hill and Eltham and runs predominantly through Bexley. Like many London rivers it has been turned into a canal and is heavily degraded.

Design for London and partners commissioned East with Royal Haskoning to undertake a study of the river and to prepare a set of proposals for implementation. These include improved access, enhanced biodiversity, improved water quality, flood alleviation and the development of an integrated river maintenance plan.

Partners: Natural England, London Borough of Bexley
