The aim of the project is to deliver an effective and efficient Ancient Market area which should maintain and recreate itself as both the historic and cultural quarters of the town centre, supporting the niche shopping and small independent traders whilst attracting visitors of all ages across a wide range of interest.

Kingston Market Place and the immediate surrounding area, being at the historic heart of Kingston Town Centre, has in the past been subject to ongoing reviews over many years which has seen the delivery of low key regeneration schemes and improvements.

Kingston Town Centre has seen dramatic changes over the years and planned development proposals suggest substantial further town centre redevelopment in the future.

Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames together with Design for London are in the process of appointing consultants to kick start the public realm improvements of the Ancient Market Place and develop a strategic brief for this project. The project is supported by the Mayor's Great Spaces Initiative which aims to revitalise the capital's unique public spaces.
