Design for London is working with partners on streetscape and public space improvements, leading south from Dagenham Heathway through Dagenham Dock to the River Thames.

The project will deliver better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists as well as improving access to the river. The route will include a new public space and public buildings at Chequers Corner, a new transport interchange at Dagenham Dock and an improved pedestrian environment between the Heathway and Chequers Lane.

South of Dagenham Dock station, a trucker's cafe will animate the waterfront at Hindmans Way. The Chequers Lane proposals by Florian Beigel were completed in autumn 2006 as part of a larger renewal of the road and utilities infrastructure.

Design for London has led the project, working with a diverse team of architects:

* Florian Beigel architects and London Metropolitan University's Architecture Research Unit have developed streetscape and public space proposals for Dagenham Dock and Chequers Lane.

* Maccreanor Lavington architects has prepared proposals for the northern part of Chequers Lane, Chequers Corner and Dagenham Dock station.

* Witherford Watson Mann architects and landscape architects J & L Gibbons have designed an enhanced streetscape for Dagenham Heathway.

Partners: London Development Agency, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
