Design for London has been working closely with the London Borough of Greenwich, the London Development Agency, Transport for London and developers to help nurture and shape a series of discrete public space projects, which together will transform the public space network in Woolwich.
The Greenwich Waterfront Regeneration Agency (GWRA) leads the Woolwich Squares project, which includes the redesign of General Gordon and Beresford Squares in the town centre. Gustafson Porter was selected as the designer of the squares through an open design competition in summer 2008. Johanna Gibbons of J & L Gibbons has been appointed as client-side design advisor to help ensure coordination between the squares and adjoining projects. General Gordon Square will be completed in 2010 and Beresford Square in 2011.
Improvements to the A206 Plumstead Road corridor will help link the Royal Arsenal development to the town centre. Witherford Watson Mann Architects designed the recently completed first phase which includes a 'super crossing', making it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Plumstead Road. A second phase is due to start on site shortly. The project is funded by Central Government and managed by Transport by London (TfL).
The other key landscape phase, linking the Squares with Woolwich Common to the south, will largely be delivered by Tesco and St James Investment on the Love Lane development site.
Design for London is also exploring ways of extending and coordinating these public realm improvements towards the River Thames through the Royal Arsenal.
