West Ham offers excellent public transport accessibility and is identified as a future local centre in planning documents. However the area is severely fragmented by rail corridors. Design for London is working with partners to overcome these barriers and to develop a clear strategy for the creation of a new town centre which brings together the existing and future communities of West Ham.
A key site within the area is the 'Parcelforce' site adjacent to West Ham station. This large site, owned by the London Development Agency (LDA), has the potential to accommodate a major mixed-use development. Sergison Bates Architects explored alternative development scenarios in an initial masterplan. Part of the site will accommodate one of London's largest bus depots, relocated from the 2012 Olympic Park site and currently under construction.
The Olympic Games create the need for a new connection from West Ham station to the Greenway to help visitors access the Olympic Park. It is anticipated that the Crows Road element of this will be retained to deliver long- term improvements in the area.
