There are 31 road, railway and foot bridges connecting north and south London across the River Thames. Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for many of these structures, and Design for London has been working closely with TfL to ensure these crucial elements of London's built heritage are protected and refurbished sympathetically.

Twenty-three of London's bridges are listed. Some are Grade I (such as Tower Bridge and Richmond Bridge), others are Grade II* (such as Waterloo Bridge) and the remainder Grade II. This total includes five historic bridges recently listed by the Department for Culture Media & Sport and an additional two bridges which were upgraded from II to II*. This decision followed a formal consultation period, which included a report by Design for London assessing the historic and architectural significance of all candidates for listing.

Design for London's Heritage Advisor also advises TfL on refurbishment, alteration and maintenance projects, in liaison with English Heritage and the boroughs. Recent projects include works to Twickenham, Chiswick, Lambeth and Kew Bridges. Future projects are likely to include the remodelling of Blackfriars Railway Bridge for the Thameslink project.
