London's streets are its most pervasive public space. Their appearance therefore has a significant impact on the quality of the environment. Design for London has worked closely with Transport for London (TfL) on its Streetscape Guidance to help improve the quality and maintenance of London's streets for the benefit of all users.
The Streetscape Guidance provides advice on improving and managing the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) and promotes consistency of approach and excellence in design and workmanship. The document highlights relevant policies and guidance, sets out specific design principles and guidelines including a palette of materials and products, and acts as a best practice resource for the London boroughs and other partners.
The first version of the Streetscape Guidance was published in August 2005, and has been a powerful tool in ensuring consistency on the TLRN and that streets meet the needs of all their users.
Transport for London commissioned Arup to revise the document, and Design for London worked closely with TfL to publish the latest edition in January 2009.
