At the eastern end of the Royal Docks, Royal Albert Basin is being planned as a mixed-use neighbourhood taking advantage of its riverfront location and public transport connections.

Design for London along with one of the AJ scholars is working closely the LDA's Land & Development team and the London Borough of Newham to refresh the masterplan for this site, following earlier work by West 8 and Adams & Sutherland.

New proposals in the area include the LDA's zero carbon development and several other mixed-use residential developments which are at an early design stage. Brownfield sites in the area have been fully remediated, and there is continuing investment in road and public realm infrastructure and the possibility of a new combined heat and power energy centre. New public spaces along the riverfront and around Gallions Reach DLR station will complement and support planned developments. The new masterplan will build on these positive changes, providing a framework for new development as well as drawing on the area's unique history.

Design for London has been working with partners to ensure design coherence between different developments, including the relocation of several businesses from the planned Olympic Park site. Design for London has also been involved in briefing and selecting design teams and securing funding for public realm improvements in the area.
