Park Royal is Europe's largest industrial estate and the principal industrial area in West London. Park Royal Partnership (PRP), together with Design for London, commissioned 5th Studio to undertake a public realm strategy to tackle traffic congestion and the generally poor condition of the estate's physical fabric.
The strategy provides a coherent framework for intervention in Park Royal to improve the environmental quality of the estate's roads and spaces and to promote better connections across the area. The underlying aim of the strategy is to encourage greater walking and cycling through the estate as a measure to address increasing congestion.
The public realm strategy interprets Park Royal's public realm in three distinct layers - the network of roads and paths, the gateways or entry points into the area and the districts which define the urban form.
The strategy was completed in autumn 2008 and work is now underway to produce an implementation plan.
