The post-2012 development of the Olympic site in the Lower Lea Valley will accelerate London's expansion eastwards to accommodate the expected population growth in the capital over the coming decades - a key priority for the Government, the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency.
Design for London is the lead design client for the Legacy Masterplan Framework, as part of the London Development Agency's role as client and landowner for the Olympic site. This framework, being prepared by a consultant team led by KCAP, EDAW, and Allies and Morrison, will set out proposals for a new city district that will replace temporary Olympic facilities after 2012. The plans will be submitted for planning consent in summer 2009 and will also form part of a wider Strategic Regeneration Framework for all five Olympic host boroughs.
Design for London helped to prepare the brief for the Legacy Masterplan Framework and is leading on the physical design aspects, with a particular focus on landscape, public realm and linkages, and city form and types. Design for London is also working with the Olympic design teams to ensure the best possible designs for the 2012 Games, and that these can be transformed, with minimum wastage, into a legacy that will make a lasting difference to the successful regeneration of east London.
Design for London is also coordinating the integration of the Legacy Masterplan Framework with the emerging proposals from the six Olympic Fringe masterplans. This will allow the Olympic Park to be re-integrated into, and provide a boost to, the wider Lower Lea Valley regeneration project.
