London will need more than 300 hectares of land for materials reclamation facilities, composting facilities and advanced waste technologies to achieve its 85 per cent self-sufficiency target for managing waste by 2020. Design for London is helping the Greater London Authority to resolve the land use and design issues in relation to these facilities.

The purpose of this project is to focus on advanced waste technologies - specifically anaerobic digestion and gasification - investigating ways these technologies can be integrated within London and tackling some of the concerns that their location raises.

The study examines the environmental problems associated with these facilities and how these can be addressed through intelligent design. It also shows how the presence of these facilities can offer benefits, particularly by generating heating, cooling and power.

Dow Jones architects was commissioned to lead the project, with Arup Associates providing technical assistance on advanced waste technologies and town planning. Design for London provided design advice throughout the project from brief writing, interviewing, team selection, and shaping the final document. The study was published in April 2009.
