Design for London assisted in selecting the design team and steering the masterplan for the area immediately north of Custom House Docklands Light Railway station. The aim of the plan was to demonstrate how this location can be redeveloped to maximise the benefits that will arise from Crossrail.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Urban Initiatives were selected to prepare the masterplan. Their work establishes the potential for a new public space, investigates development opportunities close to the station, and assists in the creation of better transport connections, including an improved pedestrian and cycle link to ExCel Exhibition Centre and the Royal Docks.

The partners, including Design for London, are also in discussions about a wider Crossrail impact study, investigating how transport, economic, social and place-making benefits can be harnessed in anticipation of the opening of Crossrail in 2017. Transport for London is currently studying the interchange opportunities and travel pattern of future users. An urban design review of the station and access to it will commence in mid 2009.
