The public realm in this area is fragmented by north-south creeks and rivers, east-west transport corridors, and the rigid separation of employment and residential areas. A series of projects are proposed to improve and reconnect the public realm, as well as creating new public spaces.

The plans propose environmental improvements linked to the Barking Riverside residential development, new transport improvements such as the East London Transit and the Creekmouth loop road upgrade. Design for London are coordinating links between the proposed new public spaces as part of the East London Green Grid strategy.

In 2008 the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) commissioned Patel Taylor with URS to develop a masterplan for the regeneration of the Thames View Estate. Part of this work is looking at improving pedestrian and green links from this isolated residential estate, surrounded on all sides by industrial areas, to Barking Riverside and other residential areas to the north and east of the estate. For this element of the masterplan, LBBD with Design for London commissioned Witherford Watson Mann Architects, who had also prepared the Creekmouth to Castle Green Framework in 2004.
