Canning Town, at the mouth of the Lea Valley, is one of the most important regeneration opportunities within east London.

Underpinning all projects in the area is the Canning Town and Custom House masterplan which identifies key development sites and restructures the existing street layout. The masterplan, produced in 2007 by a team led by Erick van Egeraat Architects, focuses on defined development areas within Canning Town and on new linkages to improve Canning Town as a place to walk and cycle.

One of the first phase developments will be the area opposite Canning Town Station, which will include new space for Rathbone Market and 'Peacock Square.' These new spaces will link the station to the shops on Barking Road as well as tackling the barrier created by the A13. The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) has received significant funding from Central Government to remove the A13 roundabout which currently blights the town centre. In its place a new high quality public space will be delivered by 2011. A site owned by the London Development Agency (LDA) just south of the station will also play a key role in delivering the regeneration of this area.

Design for London is supporting the LDA Land & Development team, LTGDC and the London Borough of Newham, offering design advice, helping to produce briefs for masterplans and development projects, and providing design advice on planning applications.
