St Giles has long been a dysfunctional link between Covent Garden, Soho, Bloomsbury and Oxford Street. It is confusing and can be dangerous to navigate as a pedestrian. The area will be subject to great change in coming years. The construction of a new Crossrail station and the upgrade of Tottenham Court Road tube station could double the amount of people using the area and are likely to increase the development potential of major sites in the wider area.
Design for London has brought together the principle landowners, Westminster City Council, the London Borough of Camden and the Greater London Authority to address these issues. Farrells was commissioned to carry out a design-led Strategic Framework Study for the public realm around St Giles Circus. This is not a solid blueprint for the future, rather it is a way to gain consensus as to how the area might change in the future, by understanding the constraints and opportunities and articulating them into a common vision shared by partners.
