This project will create a high quality pedestrian environment in keeping with some of London's premier cultural institutions including the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum and Imperial College.
Design for London has worked closely with the project partners to commission the design team, continues to provide design advice and is a member of the delivery board. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Transport for London are funding the project. Enabling works have already begun at the end of 2008.
The designs, by Dixon Jones Architects with support from the Project Centre and Arup, will create a new pedestrian-friendly shared space. Animated by bold paving, imaginative lighting, tree planting and public art, the designs will strengthen the link between South Kensington station to the south and Hyde Park to the north.
Existing street furniture such as pedestrian guard railings and traffic islands will be removed to give greater priority to pedestrians. The new paving and street furniture will have a consistent design along the length of the road.
Partners: Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, City of Westminster, Mayor of London, Transport for London
