The Dagenham Washlands are located north of the A13 near the Ford motor works. A £12 million programme of flood risk management proposed by the Environment Agency to reduce flooding of downstream landholdings is underway. Alongside this, European Regional Development Funding has been secured to develop 53 hectares of multifunctional green space and deliver a range of social, economic and environmental benefits. Proposals include the provision of a new storage area for 430,000 m3 of floodwater, reducing flood risk to £1.5 billion worth of property, and the provision of 4km of new or enhanced cycle and footpaths connecting 40,000 people to the River Thames for the first time in 90 years.

Design for London has prepared a design quality management and delivery strategy for the project, as part of the London Thames Gateway Parklands Business Plan.
