Cross River Park is a proposal for a new metropolitan park on both sides of the River Thames between East Beckton and Thamesmead. The project is a major opportunity arising from the East London Green Grid to create new public open landscape embracing and enhancing access to the River Thames.
Design for London together with partners has led on feasibility work. We commissioned Entec, Karres en Brands, Maxwan and Tribal Consulting to undertake a feasibility study for the park. The vision is to develop a 'Life-Cycle Park', showcasing the often unseen areas that serve London, such as recycling facilities, the UK's largest sewage treatment plant at Beckton, Belmarsh Prison and remediated landfill-sites.
Armada Green, the first new public space in the Cross River Park area, designed by Adams & Sutherland, opened in 2008. Design for London and its partners are also progressing feasibility studies (due to complete in summer 2009) for key local movement and landscape projects within the Cross River Park area, such as the Greenway, Beckton Alp and the Beckton Loop.
Partners: Greater London Authority, Transport for London, the London Boroughs of Newham and Greenwich, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation
