This public space project led by the London Borough of Croydon, uses the opportunity created by the construction of the A23 relief road to revitalise the public realm in Coulsdon Town Centre in south London.

Design for London has provided support to the London Borough of Croydon and Transport for London to select the consultants of this project. Design for London remains part of the project design team, ensuring that the scheme delivered on the ground is of the highest quality.

The plans, developed by Matrix Associates and Burns+Nice with support from Atkins, create a high quality streetscape, including the development of a tree lined boulevard between Lion Green Road and Chipstead Valley Road. The plans provide for wider footways, more legible spaces and a re-affirmation of the town centre's character. The aim is to increase activity on the street and to boost local trade and business.

The estimated cost of this the scheme is £4.35 million. Transport for London is providing £2.9 million through the Local Improvement Plan.

Advanced works on this scheme commenced in autumn 2008 and the main works will start later in 2009. The anticipated 11 month long contract will deliver a much needed public space for Coulsdon.
