Design for London is working with a wide range of public and private sector partners to deliver long-term public realm improvements in central London - the commercial, historical and cultural core of the capital. One core objective is to ensure that major new transport infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and Thameslink, and the increased development opportunities that these bring about, are fully integrated within their environs through an inclusive, high quality public realm.
Design for London's role in this complex process is twofold:
* Through a strategic overview of ongoing initiatives and future opportunities we aim to achieve a flexible but coordinated approach to the public realm in central London.
* On individual projects, Design for London's engagement focuses on assistance in the development of project briefs, provision of urban design advice and the promotion of high quality architects, landscape architects and urban designers.
Projects include improvements to streets, squares and other public spaces, such as public transport interchange nodes, striking the right balance between all users. Particular attention is given to implementation in advance of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
